Artist Registry

The White Columns Curated Artist Registry is an online platform for emerging and under-recognized artists to share images and information about their respective practices. The Registry seeks to create a context for artists who have yet to benefit from wider critical, curatorial or commercial support. To be eligible, artists cannot be affiliated with a commercial gallery in New York City.

STATEMENT OF WORK

Exploring how the layers of paint have the capacity to mimic layers of histories felt and implied, I apply paint in transparent and textured layers to create spaces constructed from memory. Often reflecting on my upbringing in San Francisco, this world-building is a cumulation of lived experience and a meditation on the cultural variances in which I was raised. When painting, I am seeking a resonance within the convergence of texture, transparency, and color. I think about implied space, and what/where the space I am creating would exist in relation to my own life.

Wiping away paint for me is an act of revelation. The additive process of applying layers of paint is accompanied by the deconstructive process of pulling paint away. These retracting marks leave traces, ghosts within the composition of decisions made and unmade. This juxtaposing process draws on the excavation of history and memory that reverberates through the painted surface, formulating toward deeper conceptions of self. My current body of work takes influence from the California landscape painters Miyoko Ito and Richard Diebenkorn. Inspired by their hues and distinctive interpretations on the natural, I am ruminating on the potential of painting space to be personal, a means of place-keeping and place-making.
