Artist Registry

The White Columns Curated Artist Registry is an online platform for emerging and under-recognized artists to share images and information about their respective practices. The Registry seeks to create a context for artists who have yet to benefit from wider critical, curatorial or commercial support. To be eligible, artists cannot be affiliated with a commercial gallery in New York City.

RESUME

Olga Hiiva was born in the former Soviet Union, in the era of “refusnics” and “samizdat”. The family was among first one hundred Decedents to immigrate to Israel and later to the United States.

Olga began her studies of art at the Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg Russia. After receiving her BFA from the Corcoran School of Art in Washington DC.  She went to Paris on a French Gov. fellowship award and worked at the studio of Henrie Cartier Bresson. Olga earned her MFA at Pratt Institute, then received a scholarship to attend the Skowheegan School for Painting and Sculpture. Ms Hiiva participated in artist residencies at the Banff Centre in Canada, Blue Mountain Centre NY, and the Inter Arts Colony NY. She has exhibited at ABC Carpet and Home, NYC. Tenri Institute, NYC. Dowling College, LI. Brauer Museum, Conn. Corcoran Gallery of Art, Wash. DC.  Currently she is a National Member of the AIR gallery, Brooklyn NY.

Olga paints on tablecloths, bedspreads and garments that she finds in thrift shops, trunks, and attics. Sometimes, she paints on fabrics that are very old and have been passed down to her by relatives. The process by which Ms. Hiiva arrives at her paintings is akin to an archaeological unearthing of found objects, where an object is discovered and then rediscovered with layers of meaning within the assorted cloth. She looks for patterns woven, embroidered, or sown by the invisible hands, letting the existing patterns guide her work. When contemplating the concepts of female dependence and independence, motherhood and sacrifice, of beauty, violence and vulnerability
