Artist Registry

The White Columns Curated Artist Registry is an online platform for emerging and under-recognized artists to share images and information about their respective practices. The Registry seeks to create a context for artists who have yet to benefit from wider critical, curatorial or commercial support. To be eligible, artists cannot be affiliated with a commercial gallery in New York City.

RESUME

Bio:

I am the son of Cuban refugees.

My father arrived in Miami without parents in the 1960’s in a program called Pedro Pan.

I grew up with him constantly telling me “only the strong survive”. In elementary school a teacher nicknamed me “little boy blue”. Later,  I attended an all boy Jesuit School. We all wore uniforms. I was often reminded to tuck in my shirt and was sent home to get a haircut. I wanted to express the way I felt - rebellious within the structure I was in. My grades were good. The first subject that caught my attention and held my natural need for understanding was Psychology. Without exposure to art, and with the idea that I needed to discover my own way to create without an academic institution, I studied Psychology in college. I had a deep need to see, feel, smell, paint. I thought of the color red. I began painting and making pictures in 2005. I dove right in. At one point, I got a second job at the Miami Dade Public Library. After properly shelving the books, I utilized the time on my shift in the basement to study the art books that needed to be shelved.

I’ve worked at various social service settings- shelters, foster care agencies, immigration hubs, street outreach, all the while I made art. Quietly.

I’ve now arrived at a time when I've combined Psychology with art as the Director of an arts non profit in Chelsea New York. Not far from where you are now.

I am married to a Senior Textile Conservator at The Met.

We have a son. He loves soccer and loves to draw.
