Artist Registry

The White Columns Curated Artist Registry is an online platform for emerging and under-recognized artists to share images and information about their respective practices. The Registry seeks to create a context for artists who have yet to benefit from wider critical, curatorial or commercial support. To be eligible, artists cannot be affiliated with a commercial gallery in New York City.

RESUME

Bio:

Daniel Milanese (b. 1986, Lacombe, Alberta) is a Canadian visual artist based in

Ponoka, Alberta. He began with an early exposure to the visual arts,

nurtured by a family that placed strong value on both creative and spiritual

expression. From a young age, Milanese had access to professional materials—

particularly oil paints and charcoal—thanks to the generosity of his two older

brothers, whose own artistic pursuits inspired and guided his initial development.

Throughout his formative years, Milanese deepened his engagement with the

visual arts, notably under the mentorship of a supportive high school art teacher

who played a critical role in solidifying his commitment to the field. His artistic

practice continued to evolve with the ongoing encouragement of his wife,

following their marriage in 2007.

Milanese’s process is grounded in both traditional and experimental approaches.

While oil painting and charcoal drawing provided the foundation of his early work,

his practice has expanded to focus primarily on automatic drawing and monotype

printmaking. These methods allow for an intuitive exploration of form, gesture and

symbolism, and now constitute the core of his artistic output.

His professional debut took place at Gallery IS in Red Deer, Alberta, and he has

since maintained steady involvement in local visual arts programming, contributing

to exhibitions and community arts initiatives throughout Central Alberta.

Milanese’s work reflects a balance between disciplined technique and expressive

spontaneity, revealing a practice shaped by lifelong curiosity and a commitment to

visual language.
