Artist Registry

The White Columns Curated Artist Registry is an online platform for emerging and under-recognized artists to share images and information about their respective practices. The Registry seeks to create a context for artists who have yet to benefit from wider critical, curatorial or commercial support. To be eligible, artists cannot be affiliated with a commercial gallery in New York City.

STATEMENT OF WORK

My work is composed of soft gradations and contrasting sharp straight lines that separate them.
I incorporate these two opposing elements into a single image and use the tension between them as a cue to express my inner world, memories and mental landscapes. They are semi-symbolic, they do not retain their original form and all narrative elements have disappeared, but they are certainly reconstructions of the world as I see it through my own mind.
It is a natural consequence for me that my painting style takes a simpler direction in the process. This is because, as a Japanese, I prefer an aesthetic that favors simplicity rooted in Zen and Wabi-Sabi, and I studied classical art rooted in these concepts in depth at university.
Just as artists of the past experimented with black ink, washi paper, stone, and clay, I use contemporary materials such as acrylic and canvas to explore color contrast, rhythm, and balance.
