The White Columns Curated Artist Registry is an online platform for emerging and under-recognized artists to share images and information about their respective practices. The Registry seeks to create a context for artists who have yet to benefit from wider critical, curatorial or commercial support. To be eligible, artists cannot be affiliated with a commercial gallery in New York City.

STATEMENT OF WORK

I am a San Francisco-based artist who creates contemplative sculptures and installations that dissolve the boundaries between presence and absence, form and void. Working with deliberately humble materials—wooden sticks, yarn, wire, and fiberglass netting—I construct environments where shadows become as integral to the work as the physical objects that cast them.

I choose these common, unassuming materials for their neutrality and accessibility, allowing viewers to encounter the work without preconceptions about value or hierarchy. My minimal aesthetic serves not as reduction, but as clarification—stripping away visual noise to reveal the essential relationships between elements. Each piece emerges from careful consideration of how objects occupy space and how that occupation creates absence elsewhere.

Central to my practice is the investigation of shadow as both absence and presence. Rather than viewing shadows as mere byproducts of illuminated objects, my work positions them as active participants in spatial dialogue. When shadow and object are understood as interconnected rather than oppositional, the conventional notion of dualism begins to dissolve. The shadow reveals itself as part of the whole; the whole reveals itself as incomplete without its shadow.

Drawing from years of observing natural phenomena and the philosophical traditions of Zen Buddhism, my work embodies principles of interdependence and non-dualism. This influence manifests not through overt symbolism, but through an approach that honors the spaces between things as much as the things themselves. My installations invite contemplation of how we define boundaries—between inside and outside, presence and absence, the seen and unseen.

Located in San Francisco, a city where Eastern and Western philosophies have long intersected, my practice reflects this cultural confluence while maintaining a distinctly personal vision. My work resists fixed interpretation, instead offering viewers an opportunity to experience the fluid relationships that exist when we look beyond surface appearances.

Through this practice of patient observation and material restraint, I create spaces for reflection on the fundamental interconnectedness that underlies apparent separation—a reminder that what we consider opposite forces are often aspects of a unified whole.
