Artist Registry

The White Columns Curated Artist Registry is an online platform for emerging and under-recognized artists to share images and information about their respective practices. The Registry seeks to create a context for artists who have yet to benefit from wider critical, curatorial or commercial support. To be eligible, artists cannot be affiliated with a commercial gallery in New York City.

STATEMENT OF WORK

In my small oil paintings I focus on elemental relationships of colour and light, informed by shifting conditions of the material environment of my studio, found objects, and more hidden qualities inside and between things, perhaps coming from a dream, memory, or subtle form in nature. In the paintings, materials are layered or wiped away, building particular qualities one move after another. Adjacencies in my surroundings and in the work inform what happens, often through a resonant or associative process.

I spend most days in the studio, or otherwise out walking and looking, finding objects along the shore where I live (an island off the coast of Newfoundland). On a typical day I might make a small adjustment to an object, or find a new relationship between a constellation of things, trace the outline of something I find, use the dew from a flower in an improvisational drawing or collage, or as a first layer on a painting. There's a lot of sitting and looking and listening (waiting?) that goes on in combination with material development. The paintings evolve and emerge in conversation with these things and what they evoke internally through a sense of image and time that is more kairos than chronos.
