Artist Registry

The White Columns Curated Artist Registry is an online platform for emerging and under-recognized artists to share images and information about their respective practices. The Registry seeks to create a context for artists who have yet to benefit from wider critical, curatorial or commercial support. To be eligible, artists cannot be affiliated with a commercial gallery in New York City.

RESUME

Kim Collmer is an interdisciplinary artist working with painting, sculpture, and video. Currently living in Cologne, she grew up in both the US and Germany. Collmer received her MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in Sculpture. Here she developed her first animations combined with installation. Since then she has expanded her work to include collage and painting. She has taught at the School of the Art Institute, the University of Arts Berlin and the University of Arts Bremen.

Kim Collmer has exhibited internationally with art exhibitions in the US and Europe and film screenings worldwide. Her animations have been described as having "an epic sweep" by the New York Times and she has been compared to Alexander Calder for her films' childlike charm by the New Yorker.

When working in her Cologne studio, Collmer fluctuates between screen and real-time creation. Often employing found materials such as old books, art magazines, and painted cut-outs, she creates collages that are both sculptural and pictorial, playing with spatial perception and environments. These collages focus on patterns, textures, and forms and playfully reference repetition found in minimalism, time-based media, and machinic production. This work has evolved into paintings that explore imagined rooms and cities, very reminiscent of her early film work. Additionally, she has returned to 16mm which was inspired by a workshop she attended at the Oberhausen Film Festival led by the film collective, Film Farm. Film Farm supports ecological filmmaking techniques and collaboration. This has led to new works focusing on plants and hidden ecological spaces.
