The White Columns Curated Artist Registry is an online platform for emerging and under-recognized artists to share images and information about their respective practices. The Registry seeks to create a context for artists who have yet to benefit from wider critical, curatorial or commercial support. To be eligible, artists cannot be affiliated with a commercial gallery in New York City.

STATEMENT OF WORK

I am considering two tenses simultaneously: tapping in to a past facture of making revolutionized by R. Crumb and Philip Guston – a politically active, agitprop sensibility of sculpture and drawing – while also looking toward a future (not unlike the spiritual visions of William Blake) of fantastic, imagined structures that can be created through something as small as a termite looking toward the sun. From these tenses emerges a deliberate making embedded with a sweet, anxious hope that maybe we can learn something from other systems, systems that transcend our contemporary reality. 

We take for granted the kinds of looking and drawing space travel and prospecting produce – what other kind of looking and drawing can emerge? Conceivably a looking and drawing that opens the door for emotion in a way that technical drawing and scientific illustration fall short of. 

Looking is the purpose of both the telescope and the artist. The artist sacrifices the accuracy of a telescope for a tactility that inspires understanding and makes remote things (people, places, ideas, time) accessible and felt. The sight of a telescope and reverberations of that sight are so hard to comprehend (13 billion light years!) that they can be hard to penetrate. Temporality collapses within this light: the lifespan of a planet and a termite collide, crabs become an audience from  both the Jurassic period and a future that has yet to be experienced.
