Artist Registry

The White Columns Curated Artist Registry is an online platform for emerging and under-recognized artists to share images and information about their respective practices. The Registry seeks to create a context for artists who have yet to benefit from wider critical, curatorial or commercial support. To be eligible, artists cannot be affiliated with a commercial gallery in New York City.

STATEMENT OF WORK

I focus on observational and experiential painting: on climate, atmosphere, species and environmental justice. I have spent the past years conserving land in a community of artists and like minds; my time of which is focused on due diligence, grantmaking, funding, audits, and partner conversations.

Establishing a new protected area is a rather immaterial practice, as at the end of the work there is no change to the physical location -- it remains the same as it has always. What has changed is a line drawn on a map. In real life, in nature, that line is transparent, so it is just a drawing.

I am learning and between the rain and the elements, and the changing light, it is impossible to capture what I see, beyond the magic or the mystery of the place itself. I hope to translate this unknown in part to the canvas, to make something that is refreshing, and to inspire future conservation.

After supporting 33 new conservation-protected areas, I began going to the locations with the intent of painting and drawing during due-diligence visits. The focus of the locations is biodiversity and beta diversity conservation, and as such the drawings are often too complex to fully capture.

The locations are preserved for climate balance, community health, for biodiverse and reproduction purposes. The habitat of non-human species is reducing quickly. There are approximately 8.7 million species, via a rough estimate. As an artist, I am interested in the rights of all species.
