Artist Registry

The White Columns Curated Artist Registry is an online platform for emerging and under-recognized artists to share images and information about their respective practices. The Registry seeks to create a context for artists who have yet to benefit from wider critical, curatorial or commercial support. To be eligible, artists cannot be affiliated with a commercial gallery in New York City.

STATEMENT OF WORK

Early on in his career, Daniel Ramos made images of his family members, neighbors, and coworkers: first generation immigrants and the working class. He used photography to magnify their presence in the world. He has recently begun moving beyond the single image approach of picture making to create 3-dimensional sculptures, large-scale photomontages, and mixed media installations.

Ramos works with his own photographs, family heirlooms, memorabilia, and archives and places them directly on or among discarded wood, ceramic tile, and other construction materials to preserve and reveal his cultural and personal history. By placing construction materials in his work, he is making a reference to the impermanence of the human condition. Ramos aims to remind his viewer that the natural world is free from politics, and if we preserve our own legacy, we have control of our history.
