Artist Registry

The White Columns Curated Artist Registry is an online platform for emerging and under-recognized artists to share images and information about their respective practices. The Registry seeks to create a context for artists who have yet to benefit from wider critical, curatorial or commercial support. To be eligible, artists cannot be affiliated with a commercial gallery in New York City.

STATEMENT OF WORK

In my art, the blind spot gets the spotlight. I’m interested in the things to the side of the focus; I’m always fascinated by what’s happening in the corner of your eye, in the background, behind the scenes. You see two men having sex, I see the sticky leather sofa underneath their naked skin. Having worked predominantly in video, I’ve only recently begun exploring photography, bridging the gap between moving pictures and video still images.

About PERIPHERY: “Early in his career, German-born Florian Sachisthal earned a supplementary income editing gay porn in Berlin. In 2020 he discovered 11 hours of raw, unedited footage on a discarded hard drive and noticed that the tape had ran on between takes, documenting off-screen interactions. From this excavated material emerged PERIPHERY, a collection of  transmogrified, glitchy video stills; naked figures gather against luminescent backdrops, often pixelated and distorted as a result of faulty mini-DV tapes. Sachisthal plays with the psychology of desire, arousal, and eroticism; scenes that would ordinarily be hardcore are instead hazy, creating an allure in knowing that the ‘explicit’ is just out of frame. Linking the images to the original source, he includes actual pages of porno-screenplays, shooting schedules, performer questionnaires and video loops.”
