Artist Registry

The White Columns Curated Artist Registry is an online platform for emerging and under-recognized artists to share images and information about their respective practices. The Registry seeks to create a context for artists who have yet to benefit from wider critical, curatorial or commercial support. To be eligible, artists cannot be affiliated with a commercial gallery in New York City.

STATEMENT OF WORK

Statement

A large part of my work over the years has centered on portraiture, in particular portraits and figural narratives of women and girls. In my work I look for the emotional and visual intersections between awkwardness, beauty and strength in their features and then create that through gestural marks of paint and color. Anxiety and self-consciousness of being looked at are also a large part of the experiences that underlies and motivates my portrait works. My paintings are made with immediacy, often done in one sitting, and have always been based on the personal relationship I have or develop with my subjects. My subjects are usually close friends or family members so there is an intimacy as well as immediacy to capturing them. They either sit for the actual painting or more often just pose for a series of photos. The objective in these paintings is not so much to depict the female gaze that I as the artist have on my female subjects, but rather to capture the female gaze in my subjects and radiate that back onto the viewer.

My most recent body of work is based on a series of photographs I've done over the years of figures under water, as well as some recent photos of female friends and relatives outdoors in gardens or lounging by the pool.
