The White Columns Curated Artist Registry is an online platform for emerging and under-recognized artists to share images and information about their respective practices. The Registry seeks to create a context for artists who have yet to benefit from wider critical, curatorial or commercial support. To be eligible, artists cannot be affiliated with a commercial gallery in New York City.

STATEMENT OF WORK

At a time when we are becoming increasingly divorced from the physical world by slick screens and quick images, I craft image/objects that promote slow viewing experiences and intimate, tactile engagements. Hung on the wall like paintings, yet constructed using found fabrics and a variety of textile processes, my works hover between representation and reality. These image/objects are personal narratives that hold memories of life having been lived. At the same time, they are firmly present and seem to have life of their own. 

My work cannot be known in an instant. Tactile curiosities, optical illusions, and relationships that connect across forms are slowly revealed to viewers who take their time in looking. There is always a tension between two things: absence/presence, near/far, life/death, lightness/weight, image/object. I mix the flexible with the firm, the shiny with the dull, the labored with the spontaneous, and the actual with the illusory. These rhythms, tensions, and material transitions are slow pleasures - to be savored again and again, without a rush for meaning.

The human is always present in my work. Accumulative processes such as stitching and beading record my actions as the maker. Used clothing items - sweaters, dresses, skirts - are repurposed, painted and combined in unfamiliar ways, but lead back to the body through recognizable clues such as a waistband, button, or sleeve. Organically shaped, full of wrinkles, bulges and stains, these physical images contain marks gained through time. As they flicker back and forth between pictorial space and material reality, these image/objects appear caught midstep. Coming from somewhere, going to somewhere. Unsettled, human, they hover between two worlds.
