The Sacred Union (Excerpt)

The Sacred Union (2018) is a narrative about the artist, archaeologist, writer and theosophist Nicholas Roerich. The video focuses on a period of Roerich’s life in which he pursued a utopian project he referred to as the Sacred Union of the East. His aim was to recruit Buddhist masses to join his spiritual commonwealth under Bolshevik Russia. As the protagonist travels through various landscapes of Mongolia, his external appearance is slowing transforming to illustrate the true intent of his mission. Initially, his outer appearance seems to indicate that he is pursuing a spiritual journey aligned with Tibetan Buddhist pursuits. As the journey unfolds, we see that his real allegiance is to Bolshevik Russia. The Sacred Union highlights a figure who simultaneously strives to unite cultures including America, Buddhist Asia, Bolshevik Russia and India while also strengthening their divisions as a result of his disingenuous rhetoric.

The Race

The Race takes place in Mongolia, one of the most sparsely populated countries in the world. The video follows a small robot attending a camel race in the county’s Gobi Desert. The robot exhibits striking similarities with the simplistic robots produced to function as camel racing jockeys in countries such as Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, United Arab Emirates, and Qatar. These robot jockeys were introduced as a solution to concerns about the exploitation of children used to jockey racing camels. This unanticipated relationship between Mongolia and these distant countries is a profound one. Like these nations, Mongolia has also faced issues with child exploitation within the world of racing. Children between the ages of 7 and 10 are often used to jockey racehorses during Naadam, the country's biggest festival. Like these Arab nations, Mongolia will soon be forced to develop a solution for this problem, because public pressure, similar to what occurred in the Arab World of racing, is started to mount for Mongolia as well. In this unexpected manner, this small robot’s spectator experience highlights a common struggle between power and morality.

Rising Divergence (Excerpt)

"Rising Divergence” focuses on the popular Vietnamese national creation myth epic, often referred to as “the 100 egg story”. The video compares this story with creation myths, from around the world, far removed from the Vietnam. “Rising Divergence” explores the central theme of separation as it is used within the narrative of each of these creation myths, uncovering connections between each and the “100 egg story” of Vietnam. Using costuming to reference these cultures, “Rising Divergence” subtly plays out “the 100 egg story” by touching on certain aspects of the myth. The story telling of the Dogon from Mali, Miao from China, Lakota from North America and Rabari from India, are each examined throughout the piece, as they relate with the Vietnam myth.
