Summer Hit 2014 is a very short video that juxtaposes Ariana Grande's rocket-launching breasts from her music video "Break Free" with a CBS News clip of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict (both are "hits" from the summer). This work considers the viewer's relationship to and participation with violence.
Summer Hit 2015 is part of an ongoing series that considers representations of violence in broadcast news and music videos. This work features clips of Britney Spears who is lowering her glasses to view an explosion, and Rhianna’s butt which moves seductively next to an unconscious woman who is face-down underwater. The video uses picture-in-picture editing, commonly used in news programs, which obscure footage of a US attack on an ISIS artillery base. This work points to the impossibility of understanding mediated violence, and as Selena Gomez states, “I just want to look good for you, good for you, uh-huh.”
