The White Columns Curated Artist Registry is an online catalog of digital images documenting the work of artists who are not affiliated with a commercial gallery in New York City. Each submission is reviewed by our curatorial staff; in order to be considered for the registry, one must submit work digitally via this website.
My practice explores narratives of resistance and complicity in form and meaning through sculpture, installation and photography. These diverse works challenge conventional ideas of structure, taste and progress in representations of race and class framed by the enduring legacies of culture and capital.
I enlist the fanciful ornamentation of chinoiserie as an emblem of domination to explore the lingering indexes that visibly mark Black representation. This dynamic role-play of race and desire, in the continuous exchange of difference doubled, is collapsed through analogy and austere display. In pleasing gestures that paradoxically assure and menace, my sculptures and installations actively work to complicate iconographies of position and possession - teasing out how our lived experience is organized and subjugated, to construct new spaces and possibilities for arrest and challenge.
