The White Columns Curated Artist Registry is an online catalog of digital images documenting the work of artists who are not affiliated with a commercial gallery in New York City. Each submission is reviewed by our curatorial staff; in order to be considered for the registry, one must submit work digitally via this website.
My work develops intuitively through a process of layering paint and other materials. At some point while working, there is a recognition of an 'other' quality at which point a piece starts to form itself, apart from what I had in mind for it. When the pieces are complete, the colors and textures of the paint and the paintings as objects operate together in subtle relationships. I am inspired by the natural environment and surprising contradictions of weight, texture and depth one experiences on a regular walk in the park. I look for textures and compositions that are pleasing yet odd bedfellows. When the pieces feel funny, tactile, silent and whole each in their own way, I can begin to put them together in groups, little exclusive families. This is the best part of the process and is the most difficult to achieve.
