The White Columns Curated Artist Registry is an online catalog of digital images documenting the work of artists who are not affiliated with a commercial gallery in New York City. Each submission is reviewed by our curatorial staff; in order to be considered for the registry, one must submit work digitally via this website.
In these drawings with words, I am bringing narrative to concrete poetry. Concrete poetry has traditionally focused on the object quality of the word. Introducing narrative, or giving meaning to this visually organized list of words, has allowed me to express irony, humor, and some emotional complexity.
These drawings are meant to be looked at first. The vertical repitition of individual letters is the way these drawings are visually organized. Then the individual words are read horizontally, with the mind completing the word if there are spaces between the letters. Finally, the thought or narrative reads vertically, top to bottom.
