The White Columns Curated Artist Registry is an online catalog of digital images documenting the work of artists who are not affiliated with a commercial gallery in New York City. Each submission is reviewed by our curatorial staff; in order to be considered for the registry, one must submit work digitally via this website.
My work explores the parallel between theater and photography – in both one enters a black box and an image appears. Each aspect of the experience is rigorously studied, observed and inventoried: The performer in the spotlight (CIRCUS), the spotlight itself, the curtain and proscenium (STAGE) and most recently an encyclopedic series imaging the echoes of American music history (LISTEN). Current projects examine both the craft of the actor and the impression of applause. A methodical visual compendium on the idea of performance is carefully being constructed.
Experiencing music, listening, is an act both collective and personal. For this reason I stood alone in the spaces I visited. Room is cleared for memory, which in turn accepts time. And time is the heart of music, as the pulse and rhythm of call and response.
The LISTEN project is a comprehensive visual mapping of American Rock n’ Roll’s inner architecture made over 10 years of travel to 389 venues in 87 cities in 26 states.
