The White Columns Curated Artist Registry is an online catalog of digital images documenting the work of artists who are not affiliated with a commercial gallery in New York City. Each submission is reviewed by our curatorial staff; in order to be considered for the registry, one must submit work digitally via this website.
I am interested in the ways that environments can speak beyond themselves; in what landscape and land use has to say about the human condition, human history, human power, and the interrelation between natural histories and our own. The pictorial tradition-- painting and photography and the way they have been used to represent landscape and human space-- serve both to capture facets of what an environment is by literally documenting it, but also expose inner connections and underlying narratives by flatting, abstracting, and framing these spaces. At the same time, object-based installation can serve another sort of representation, by allowing for the experience of a spatial situation similar to the one that inspired the response. My work shifts between flat and spatial methods, exploring site and our relation to it.
