The White Columns Curated Artist Registry is an online catalog of digital images documenting the work of artists who are not affiliated with a commercial gallery in New York City. Each submission is reviewed by our curatorial staff; in order to be considered for the registry, one must submit work digitally via this website.
About 12 years ago I began making artwork using simple systems and extreme repetition. The work embraced the inclusion of structural anomalies, which to me became a metaphorical representation of the life of a person. As unexpected events occur which alter the thoughts and actions of a person, the result is a life, or visual structure, that is more interesting and beautiful than it would be otherwise. A similar metaphor continues in my current artwork in which the movement of people is figuratively mapped out to examine the relational structure.
The content of the artwork is juxtaposed by the material fact of the painting, which is emphasized by using shaped panels for the format. There are areas of spatial illusion within the painting, but holes within the field and the edge of the format are a constant reminder that the painting is an object.
