The White Columns Curated Artist Registry is an online catalog of digital images documenting the work of artists who are not affiliated with a commercial gallery in New York City. Each submission is reviewed by our curatorial staff; in order to be considered for the registry, one must submit work digitally via this website.
This work originates from my interest in the trends and uses of patterns and color around us. I am also inspired by everyday personal expressions found in handwriting and doodles. I use fabric paint to make repetitive gestures and marks on canvas that mimic the sensibility of printed fabric. Sometimes recognizable shapes such as shoes, googly-eyes, clouds and hands.
In many pieces, I cut the canvas and sew it back together creating another subtle composition. The seams also function to interrupt emerging patterns, create moments of pause and/or add an additional geometric composition. Sometimes the painted gestures reconnect through the seam and in other places the gestures jog left or right. I am interested in the way the seams can create a tension against the silly comical gestures of the paintings.
