The White Columns Curated Artist Registry is an online catalog of digital images documenting the work of artists who are not affiliated with a commercial gallery in New York City. Each submission is reviewed by our curatorial staff; in order to be considered for the registry, one must submit work digitally via this website.
Lately, I aim to make paintings that engender loops of apprehension, misregistration, and refusal of their signifying gestures, of the signs or near-signs that they contain. I am less interested in arriving at one meaning in my work, than in getting close enough to the possibility of many meanings without closing them down. To stall is to defer, perhaps in defiance of another kind of stall: a name, an identity category. A paper bag remains empty. Graphite doesn’t penetrate nylon, but gradually rubs off. A donkey resists the impending violence of coming into language. Not yet. But to delay is also to retain the desire to say Hello!
