The White Columns Curated Artist Registry is an online catalog of digital images documenting the work of artists who are not affiliated with a commercial gallery in New York City. Each submission is reviewed by our curatorial staff; in order to be considered for the registry, one must submit work digitally via this website.
Whitney Lynn employs a wide range of media to create works that reframe narratives of familiar objects, images and events. Mining cultural and political histories, Lynn uses tactics of appropriation to reflect on subjects such as militarized landscapes, historical archetypes and the role of images in the creation of myth. Born on Williams Air Force Base, she attended the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, received her BFA in Sculpture + Extended Media from Virginia Commonwealth University and MFA in New Genres from the San Francisco Art Institute
Lynn's work has been exhibited at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Torrance Art Museum, Corcoran Gallery of Art (Washington, D.C.), and Exit Art (NYC). She was the first-ever National Artist-in-Residence at The Neon Museum, Las Vegas (2016) and an Artist-in-Residence at the de Young Museum, San Francisco (2017). Additional recent projects include After The Fall, a solo exhibition examining the archetype of the temptress at Bass & Reiner, San Francisco (2017); Sirens, a solo exhibition exploring mechanisms of illusion and deception at Auxiliary Projects, Brooklyn (2016); and Searching for Diogenes, a solo installation and 3-part performance surveying the legacy of Diogenes the Cynic at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, San Francisco (2014).
