Artist Registry

The White Columns Curated Artist Registry is an online platform for emerging and under-recognized artists to share images and information about their respective practices. The Registry seeks to create a context for artists who have yet to benefit from wider critical, curatorial or commercial support. To be eligible, artists cannot be affiliated with a commercial gallery in New York City.

Room For Storms Documentation, East River Bandshell

What does a hurricane sound like? How about a whole season of them? Three New York-based composer-performers will offer their takes as they improvise accompaniment to satellite footage of the 2008 storm season, projected in East River Park’s bandshell as part of artist Birgit Rathsmann’s Room For Storms series. This installment, the third in the series, features musicians Alan Licht, Ben Vida and Doron Sadja. Their music draws on a wide range on styles, including analog and digital synthesis, and all of them are keen collaborators. Each musician will accompany a 15-minute screening of satellite footage of all hurricanes in the Atlantic Basin between April and October, 2008, created and donated by the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration.

Malpaso, Extract

This video was shown as part of an installation, an exhibition focusing on the artists’ dialogue with an historic river valley in Chiapas, Mexico that’s now submerged beneath the waters of a reservoir behind a dam -- a fluid locus where the quest for autonomy struggles to overcome thwarted beliefs. The exhibition is organized around the metaphor of a small museum that documents the artists’ subjective experience of the landscape surrounding the Malpaso Reservoir in western Chiapas. The show investigates the historical layers of violence foisted onto this landscape as a consequence of colonialism, religion, and “progress”.
