Artist Registry

The White Columns Curated Artist Registry is an online platform for emerging and under-recognized artists to share images and information about their respective practices. The Registry seeks to create a context for artists who have yet to benefit from wider critical, curatorial or commercial support. To be eligible, artists cannot be affiliated with a commercial gallery in New York City.

The most basic source of my work is the compulsion to draw. I can't remember a time when I wasn't scribbling monsters on whatever surface was handy. My catholic upbringing combined with animation, comics, and all kinds of fantasy culture has populated my imagination with a massive bestiary of crazy creatures.

Under the influence of all of these cartoonish things, as well as a later love of chinese, tibetan and south asian painting, I have developed a linear drawing style which has become my default visual language. I use this drawn language as a foundation for a much wider range of artistic expression that encompasses animation, installation, painting, as well as drawing.

The subjects I explore include politics, mortality, and violence. I like to approach these things in an oblique way, and some techniques I have used in the past include public survey projects, collaborative battle drawings, and animations done over appropriated video. Lately, I have been exploring animations that are projected onto and interact with a specific place. I have also been integrating myself into my animations, creating stop-motions of large paper puppets with which I interact.

My biggest challenge it to not take things too seriously. I'm working with some dark stuff, but I always try to keep a childish sense
of fun in the mix.
