I make mixed-media collages on paper & canvas that combine imagery and materials from pop culture, current events, online, & everyday life into surreal worlds. These worlds are often fragmented & enigmatic, opening a window on our current social and cultural condition.
What does it mean to be alive in 2010? I want my work to speak to this question, and for that reason much of my source material is recognizable: an advertisement, a photograph, a painted color. I want to invite the viewer into a dialogue, and the entry point is something familiar, something you’ve seen.
To me collage is not material specific and is rather a process of coalescing multiple media and/or imagery. The medium invites absurd jarring combinations; juxtaposition and dissonance are commonplace. I'm more interested in amplifying the formal connections and rich tonal disparity between several media, leaving the viewer to sort of how something was made and how it might connect conceptually. By rendering images in paint, photograph, ink and paper, the surface—and its thematic intricacy---becomes vividly fluid. This vitality and life is what I want my work to embody. |
