The White Columns Curated Artist Registry is an online catalog of digital images documenting the work of artists who are not affiliated with a commercial gallery in New York City. Each submission is reviewed by our curatorial staff; in order to be considered for the registry, one must submit work digitally via this website.
Throughout my work I employ trompe l’oeil painting as a tool to blur the distinctions between reality, illusion, fact, and fiction and consider their mutual roles in the construction of history, knowledge, memory, and perception. I use found objects—books, film, photographs, ephemera, souvenirs, paraphernalia, and quotidian things—culled from my environment as source material through which to examine these constructs. While the objects and images I reproduce through painting might initially be perceived as their real counterparts, further inspection that reveals evidence of the material and my hand leads to a shift in perspective through defamiliarization. Mining this visually unstable terrain is the most effective and communicative way for me to question what we know about the past, the present, ourselves, and how we perceive the world around us.
