The White Columns Curated Artist Registry is an online catalog of digital images documenting the work of artists who are not affiliated with a commercial gallery in New York City. Each submission is reviewed by our curatorial staff; in order to be considered for the registry, one must submit work digitally via this website.
My recent figurative sculptures are portraits of friends and acquaintances. The exchange between artist and subject becomes an intimate collaborative project where the sculptures serve as a record of my inquiry to capture the personality of my subject, as well as to preserve the transaction between observed and observer through a frozen history of gestural mark-making. Often times, the sculptures evolve through several, interrupted sessions. This elongation of time, combined with the reworking of the sculpture while the subject is absent help transform the otherwise figurative sculpture into something abstract, biomorphic, organic and uncanny. The spirit of the initial subject remains, but the resulting physicality of the sculpture is prioritized.
