My sculptures, drawings, and installations address the theatrics of self-invention and the methods we use to construct and refine individual personas. Ascribing to the ethos of “fake it till you make it” my work delves into questions regarding the performance of identity, and the trappings used to lend credibility to this production. In a digital age increasingly defined by issues of privacy and self-display, I am amazed by the many ways we choose to “stage” our identities online, carefully editing information to portray ourselves as well-read, clever, good-looking, and culturally aware. The use of such strategies is closely linked to the world of theater, advertising, studio portraiture, and other forms of staged display that appear regularly in my work. |
