BRACKETING

Depending on the context and the time of their arrangement, objects and images can take on many configurations. As I amass and create new forms, they become caught up in a universe, dispersing as stars do - sometimes replacing previous items, other times joining together to create new dialogues. Time and accumulation create installations that are malleable. These things absorb time.

OBJECTS

The object is a thing to be activated, or like ritual objects, has the potential for activity. Text surrounds the objects and provides a key to their arrangement. The objects hover, waiting to become the owners of matter. These objects are tools, portals, delineators of time, or soft dividers that subtly block a portion of space. They fluidly displace the atoms in the air around them. Objects are constructed using found and raw materials, often retaining a trace of their material history. The varnish is removed and something remains.

PERSISTENT IMAGES

Images are still, a solid moment and yet a portal. Photographs, watercolors and drawings are joined with each other and objects. Analogous to the relationship between light and the photographic image, watercolors and drawings are indexes of ideas and of mark making on paper. When water is poured on the paper, the image is stamped with the time of its creation. Images are performed under, propped in windows, placed above doorways and mounted on stands. Like the objects, these images are gathered over expanses of time and accumulate meaning through their long-term resonance.

CASUAL GHOSTS

Accumulations create casual ghosts, the ghosts left by the subjects of the images and objects. Performative gestures are a way to activate things and to evoke those ghosts. My performative gestures include slide lectures, site-specific libations, invocations of the imperfect double, and readings from books and original texts. Libations, a way to enter the here and now, provide a moment in which to focus on the space and the objects that one is about to encounter. The imperfect double is a second self, the mediated other who whispers demands and overlaps my voice. Text readings envelope the objects and images with the vestiges of an experience or idea.

UNEASY ARCHIVES

Catalysts from daily life generate a practice of compulsive making. Relationships are formed and others break apart as objects / images / texts are accumulated.
