Anne Sherwood Pundyk

Anne Sherwood Pundyk is a new genre painter and writer based in New York City and Mattituck on the North Fork of Long Island. Her current body of work is called "The Revolution Will Be Painted" to which she brings her commitment to abstract painting and activism. Just as abstraction has transformed representation in modern and contemporary painting, performance poses its own problem to the medium. "The Revolution Will Be Painted" is a response to the question of how to paint the theatre of agency.

"The Revolution Will Be Painted" was presented in two solo shows: at Christopher Stout Gallery, New York in April 2016 and at Adah Rose Gallery, Kensington, MD in March of the same year. The artist's past solo exhibitions include Susan Eley Fine Art, New York, NY; Queens College Art Center, New York, NY; The MaVE Hotel, New York, NY: Washington & Lee University, Lexington, VA; University of Virginia, Charlottesville, VA; Asyl Gallery, New York, NY and Brown University, Providence, LI.

Pundyk recently performed in "The Revolution Will Be Painted," Christopher Stout Gallery, "Worlds Within Worlds "at Baby’s All Right, Brooklyn, NY; "Object Classification," at The Last Brucennial and initiated a feminist protest at The Whitney Biennial. In 2014, as co-editor of the feminist arts magazine "Girls Against God," she was co-curator of a performance called "Wolf Moon Gathering" at MoMA PS1 and was invited by Creative Time and The Brooklyn Museum to lead a group in Suzanne Lacy’s large-scale performance, "Between the Door and The Street." Her painting-based video, "My Atlas: Lindsay/A Report to An Academy," was screened in 2011 at the Standard Hotel, Hollywood, CA. In addition she has lectured and performed at Bushwick Art Crit Group, Manhattan Marymount College, Fordham University, Printed Matter, The Sotheby’s Institute of Art and elsewhere.

Her work has been included in group exhibitions at, among others: SPRING/BREAK Art Show, New York, NY; Fireproof Gallery, Brooklyn, NY, The New School, New York, NY, 184 Project Space, Brooklyn, NY; Gallery Sensei, LES, NY; The Last Brucennial 2014, New York, NY; Fondazione Querini Stampalia, Venice, Italy; Panepinto Galleries, Jersey City, NJ; The Wand, Berlin; Ruth Bachofner Gallery, Los Angeles, CA; Fordham University, New York, NY and Guild Hall Museum, East Hampton, NY.  Pundyk's work is in the collections of Barclay’s Bank, The Luciano Benetton Foundation, Glamorise Foundations, Barry Hoggard and James Wagner, and Cy Twombly, and others in the US and Europe.

She received her BA from Pomona College in Claremont, CA and her MFA in painting from The Rhode Island School of Design. Her work has been written about recently in artcritical, The Brooklyn Rail, Hyperallergic, The Washington Post, Hamptons Art Hub, ART21 Magazine, ArtUS, and ARTslant and London-based periodical: The Contemporary Zine.
